Hi Nena and family! We stayed near Lost Maples for our honeymoon and had hiked Garner State Park. We stopped at a bar and grill only the grill was closed so the bartender suggested Nena's. It was after lunch time so, the bartender called ahead to see if they were still open. They had already closed but Nena told us to come on and she'd make us lunch. It was wonderful, best german food we've ever had. We really enjoyed the meal and the hospitality of the owners. Thanks so much for the only meal I did not cook on our honeymoon, it was delicious!

My friend and I were riding our bikes from San Diego Ca to St. Augustin FL in an effort to contribute to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. On day 22 our ride we had spent the night in Leakey, Texas. We got ready and rolled out into the street. I asked a man sitting on a bench on the sidewalk if he knew a breakfast spot. He pointed back the way we came. we rode back through the blinking yellow light at the intersection. About three doors down, on the right, we saw a little place called Nenas's Cafe. The sign advertised German-American cuisine. We parked the bikes and went inside. It was a very nice, cozy spot. A gentleman seated us and we ordered various combinations of potatoe pancakes and eggs. It was delicious. I noticed the interaction between the man and a woman cooking in the kitchen. it was nice to see the love and respect they treated each other with. At the end of our meal,my friend went outside to get ready. The other diners had finished and gone leaving me alone with the cook. She came into the dining room and asked how everything was. I told her it was great!! She asked about what we were doing and I told her about our ride. I usually build up to the full story bit by bit. I guess I need to know they are interested before I share my wife's Deidre story with cancer and her death with them. I asked the woman I as talking with her name and she handed me her card. Her name is Nena Arlt and she the proprietress of the cafe. I told her it was time for us to ride and asked for the check. she said "consider breakfast my contribution to your efforts". I was truly touched, I really felt she understood. She said Leakey had hosted the Relay for Life the week before and raised over $200,000 go fund the war against cancer. I shook her hand and told her what a pleasure it had been talking with her and began to leave. I took her hand one more time and she gave me ahug full of love and wished us safe travels.
Nena is an exceptionally kind and caring person who warmed my heart.
Eat at Nena's Cafe when in Leakey and say hello for me.

Wow! From our entire family - WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED YOUR FOOD! What wonderful and gracious people you are - Nena, Roger, and Michele. Every year our family camps at GSP and we now have a new tradition to add - eating at Nena's! Our heritage is German on our Dad's side and we know good German food! Can't wait to visit you again. Cory and I plan on coming up this fall. See you then! Thanks again for the lovely meal and for the surprise of the Chocolate dessert! It's rare that every one of our kids finish everything on their plates..... That says it all! Vielen Dank!
